Downtown Cairo’s Zawya Cinema will host a screening of the
acclaimed documentary 50 Meters - directed by Egyptian filmmaker Yomna Khattab and
produced by Ahmed Amer - on Sunday, February 8th, followed by a Q&A with
filmmaker Heba Yousry. This marks the Cairo premiere of Khattab’s introspective
debut feature and the beginning of the film’s run at Zawya.
Set around
an outdoor 50-metre training pool, the documentary follows Khattab as she navigates
the intimate and often complex terrain of her relationship with her father — once
her home-movie cinematographer — and a water-aerobics group of elderly men. Khattab
uses the filmmaking process itself as both subject and method, probing questions
around motherhood, womanhood, fatherhood, self-identity and the vulnerable labour
inherent in art-making.
50 Meters had its world premiere at the
Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival (CPH:DOX) in March 2025 and went
on to have its Arab World premiere at El Gouna Film Festival.
The Zawya
Cinema screening will be followed by a conversation with Heba Yousry, known for
writing and co-directing ‘Sabea Gar’ (2017) and ‘El Hawa Sultan’ (2024), offering
audiences deeper insight into the film’s creative and personal journey. Additional
dates for 50 Meters screenings can be found in Zawya Cinema’s regular
programme.
